Counselor

About your school counselor:

Cyndi Groth-Landis - cyndi.groth-landis@gardencityschool.org

This is my first year as a school counselor and I love it. I am a graduate from Boise State University with a Master’s Degree in Counseling and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Last school year, I did my counseling internship at Galileo Math and Science School. I had the opportunity to work with many students in the classroom, small group and one-on-one. I truly enjoyed this experience and it inspired me to want to continue working with students in grades K-8.

As well as being a school counselor, I have been teaching at Eagle High School for thirteen years. During that time, I spent nine years as the Science Department Head and I have taught Earth Science, AP Biology, Honors and General Biology, as well as Anatomy and Zoology. In addition to those academic pursuits, I was an Assistant Varsity Girls Basketball Coach, and Assistant Varsity Softball Coach. I was also an advisor for Student Council, Earth Club, Ski Team and contributed too many aspects of the development of the school, and staff through active participation on many different committees at the building level and for the district office.

On a personal note, I am married with a 12 year old step-son, an Australian Shepherd, Jessie and a Yellow Lab, Zoe. When I am not at school, my family and I enjoy camping, hiking, biking, Nordic sports, cooking and reading.

Counseling:

School Counselors support the development of students in many ways as they grow into healthy, productive, and successful community members. The counseling program promotes: Academic Achievement and Success; Personal and Social Growth; Career Achievement.

Focus areas:

Classroom guidance: I go into your student’s classrooms to teach lessons in four units:  Success in School, Conflict Management, Safe Choices, and Careers and Future Planning.  Lessons in grades K-8 are all aligned in these units.

Small groups: Small groups are offered as needed, most often in areas such as:  children of divorce/separation, friendship skills, anger and social behaviors.

Individual work with students: I see students as needed—through self-referral, adult referral, or peer referral.

Parent education: I assist with a Tobacco Education Course taught through the Meridian School District.

Mentoring: I am hoping to team with outside community resources as mentors. These individuals will bring many opportunities to further learning to the GCCS community.

Parent/staff consultation: I am available for parents or staff as needed.
